Know your Fertile Days!

Once you have decided to start a family, quite often after years of waiting and planning, nothing, nada, zilch! The old adage of ‘at first you don’t succeed try, try again’ is just meaningless and certainly not applicable! Of course for many couples they are fortunate enough to conceive as soon as they start trying, however for others, the words infertility, ovulation and menstrual cycles dominate conversation and the journey to conception is not necessarily a straightforward one. However, that’s where the team at fertilitystore.ie steps in, we’ve collated some invaluable tips to help you along your fertile friendly way.

Timing! It’s crucial for all trying-to-conceive couples that they know when ovulation takes place. Ovulation equals your fertility window, and simply put this is the only time of the month when you will fall pregnant, making it critical that you know how to correctly identify it.

Some women rely solely on ovulation calculators or ovulation calendars, and for many they deliver accurate side effect free results but these measures are based on simple statistical averages and don't take into account your body’s own unique chemistry and indicators. We highly recommend using your Ovulation Calculator/Calendar in conjunction with another highly effective and accurate ovulation prediction method, these include:

Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs)

Working on the same premise as Pregnancy Testing Kits, Ovulation tests through sampling your urine detect the surges in Luteinising Hormone (LH) that takes place just prior to ovulation. During the course of the menstrual cycle, small amounts of LH are present, however during the middle of the cycle, the LH level briefly and substantially increases, an OPK detects this surge using anti-LH antibodies featured in the testing membrane. OPKs are available in two main formats via a test strip or a midstream test, however, the results they both yield are identical and are delivered within a 5-minute timeframe.

Saliva-Based Ovulation Microscopes

A unique and less commonly known method of detecting ovulation is the saliva-based ovulation microscope. Similar to a ‘lab’ microscope, it detects your hormonal changes as they occur just prior to ovulation. Working by detecting the estrogen surge via an increase in salinity in the saliva, and as the saliva then through a specially designed microscope creates an easy to identify crystal-like pattern called a ‘ferning’ pattern. We recommend the Fertile Focus Saliva Ovulation Microscope which can be found on fertilitystore.ie

Fertility Monitors

Often digitalised the Fertility Monitor analyses samples from your body such as saliva, urine even vaginal fluid to ascertain your fertile state. There are many fertility monitors available and at OvulationCalculator.ie and fertilitystore.ie we are proud stockists of the Clearblue Monitor and the OvaCue Fertility Monitor. The Clearblue Fertility Monitor works by tracking the levels of two key fertility hormones via your urine – LH and estrogen. You simply urinate onto a specially designed Clearblue Test Stick then analysed by the monitor it will inform you of your fertility level, optimising your chances of becoming pregnant.
